چکیده

We give a poly(logn, 1/ε)-query adaptive algorithm for testing whether an unknown Boolean function f : {−1, 1}n → {−1, 1}, which is promised to be a halfspace, is monotone versus ε-far from monotone. Since non-adaptive algorithms are known to require almost Ω(n) queries to test whether an unknown halfspace is monotone versus far from monotone, this shows that adaptivity enables an exponential improvement in the query complexity of monotonicity testing for halfspaces. Optimal Unateness Testers for Real-Valued Functions: Adaptivity Helps

We study the problem of testing unateness of functions f : {0, 1}d → R.We give aO( ε ·log d ε )query nonadaptive tester and a O( ε )-query adaptive tester and show that both testers are optimal for a fixed distance parameter ε. Previously known unateness testers worked only for Boolean functions, and their query complexity had worse dependence on the dimension both for the adaptive and the nona...

Testing (Subclasses of) Halfspaces

The purpose of this document is to summarize the talk I gave at the property testing workshop at ITCS in January 2010or more accurately, the talk I would have given, had I not been sick with the flu. In my absence, Rocco Servedio actually gave the talk. Here I will attempt to summarize what I would have said, or what Rocco might have said, or some combination of the two. The purpose of the talk...

Testing halfspaces

This paper addresses the problem of testing whether a Boolean-valued function f is a halfspace, i.e. a function of the form f(x) = sgn(w ·x−θ).We consider halfspaces over the continuous domain R (endowed with the standard multivariate Gaussian distribution) as well as halfspaces over the Boolean cube {−1, 1} (endowed with the uniform distribution). In both cases we give an algorithm that distin...

Testing a Point Null Hypothesis against One-Sided for Non Regular and Exponential Families: The Reconcilability Condition to P-values and Posterior Probability

In this paper, the reconcilability between the P-value and the posterior probability in testing a point null hypothesis against the one-sided hypothesis is considered. Two essential families, non regular and exponential family of distributions, are studied. It was shown in a non regular family of distributions; in some cases, it is possible to find a prior distribution function under which P-va...

Learning, Testing, and Approximating Halfspaces

A halfspace is a Boolean function of the form f(x) = sign(w · x− θ). Halfspaces (also known as linear threshold functions, weighted majority functions, threshold gates, Perceptrons, etc.) are a natural and wellstudied class of Boolean functions. We describe recent results on approximating, testing, and learning halfspaces. In more detail, • Every halfspace can be approximated by a halfspace wit...
